Ocean freight from India can move as FCL (full container load) or LCL (less than container load). Choosing the right option affects cost, lead time, and control over your shipment.
What is FCL?
You book an entire container (20 ft, 40 ft, or 40 ft HC) for your cargo only. The container is sealed at your origin and opened at destination. You pay for the full container regardless of how much you fill it. FCL suits larger volumes, when you have enough cargo to fill most of a box, or when you need a dedicated, secure unit.
What is LCL?
Your cargo shares a container with other shippers’ goods. A freight forwarder or consolidator groups multiple LCL shipments into one container, and at destination your portion is deconsolidated and delivered. You pay per cubic metre (CBM) or per weight — whichever the carrier uses for charging. LCL is ideal for smaller volumes that don’t justify a full container.
When to choose which
- Volume: If your cargo fills roughly half a container or more (by volume or weight), FCL often works out cheaper per unit. Below that, LCL usually costs less overall.
- Lead time: LCL involves consolidation and deconsolidation, so transit can be a few days to a couple of weeks longer than FCL on the same route.
- Risk and handling: FCL means fewer touchpoints; LCL is handled more often, so packaging and labelling matter even more.
How your forwarder helps
A good freight forwarder will compare FCL and LCL options for your volume and destination, quote both so you can decide, and handle consolidation or full-container booking, customs, and delivery. Globe Hauler offers both LCL and FCL from India and can recommend the right option for your shipment.
